About this event

Music has a profound and unique ability to touch nearly every part of the brain. From evoking memories to lifting our mood, its
effects on our memory, emotions, and overall brain function are powerful and far-reaching. In this engaging talk, we’ll explore how music can support brain health, reduce stress, and enhance social connection — all backed by fascinating research and real-life examples.
Through a mix of conversation and musical examples, we’ll dive into the science behind why music affects us the way it does, including how it stimulates memory recall, boosts mood-regulating chemicals, and even supports cognitive resilience as we age.
Sarah McKiddy is a PhD student at the University of Washington School of Nursing and the de Tornyay Center for Healthy Aging Pre-doctoral Scholar. Her research interests include cognitive health, the intersectionality of ageism, and music-based interventions for individuals living with dementia and their care partners. Her background as a professional musician and educator combined with her training as a nurse catalyzed and influenced her pathway toward researching the intersections between music and health.
