NEST member Dorothy Van Soest has worn many hats—writer, social worker, teacher, activist, professor, and university dean—but the role she loves most is that of novelist. After decades of academic writing, Dorothy came to believe that stories, not data or theory, most deeply shape how we understand ourselves and the world. As she approached retirement, she turned her focus to fiction. Dorothy will talk about her books and how immersing herself in her characters’ lives opens her heart. and helps her become “the change I want in the world.”
“Until It’s Over” (Apprentice House Press, releasing April 7, 2026), her sixth novel and fourth Sylvia Jensen mystery, explores healing from lifelong trauma through truth and action, weaving together political tension, investigative journalism, and personal relationships.
Dorothy hopes her novels foster empathy by bringing complex social issues—such as race, class, and power—to life through deeply human characters.
